The Rose Lake

The Rose Lake...an hour ride by taxi from Dakar...a huge salt lake populated by red algae that exhibits the most bizarre colorings depending on amount of sunlight and time of the year...semi-nomad hard working people live in rustic huts close to the lake and work day after day extracting salt...you find the men in the middle of the lagoon with the water up to their waist breaking the precipitated salt in the bottom of the lake with long sticks and filling their shallow boats...women help in unloading the precious cargo, making huge piles that bake in the sun...a close by tourist center offers excellent craft, and a turtle zoo displays different species from the zone and from other places in Senegal
